Virtual Reality Technology By Harsh Sharma

What is Virtual Reality

Virtual Reality (VR) Technology is new, and rising in popularity, in the current world. It is a variation of the systems seen in the Matrix and Inception. VR systems simply sync your physical body with your virtual avatar.

                         How it Works

Gloves send your physical movements to the virtual world which
you can see through the goggles.
The VR systems utilize your physical actions in reality and translate them into actions in your virtual avatar. Then all images produced are sent to a screen which you watch to create your next move. In short, it is like the current video games, but you are able see everything through the avatar's eyes giving you a more immersive environment.

What It can be Used For

The VR systems main purpose will be directed towards gaming, although, it has many other uses. Instead of driving to a meeting, you could use your VR system and join a server in which you could communicate with the others with the aid of visuals. In other words, you could see virtual power points and presentations. It could also be used for social interaction by meeting people around the world and then have a virtual walk through a virtual park to play virtual games. Another major usage for VR systems would be for blueprinting buildings and walking through the architects creation, or in a completely opposite world where there are no laws, where you could fly and build absurd buildings. Using VR systems, your imagination is literally your limit. School would also be changed as you would take tests without cheating since your vision would be restricted for what you could see from side to side. The possibilities are endless.

                                                      Our Progress

We already have products which can give us a more immersive feel such as the Oculus Rift which can track our vision and physical movement. Sony has revealed it's VR system project Morpheus for the Play Station 4. Currently, it is being used to really bring out the First Person Point of View in the Play Station games. As of now, VR systems are being used as visual aid more than anything else.

The Future

VR Systems could be used to fully immerse us in a virtual world. I am excited to see how Virtual Reality Technology will unfold and what changes it will produce in our current society.

I was inspired to right this blog when I read an article by technologyreview.com (http://www.technologyreview.com/featuredstory/531751/the-quest-to-put-more-reality-in-virtual-reality/)

  1. I think that this is important for the future, because in the future, troops could be trained with limited space. A soldier could just put the virtual reality tools on and train in a stationary space. And it could give patients that are sick a way to interact with the world in their own bed. They just have to put on the Oculus Rift and have a controller to move. Then they are free to do whatever they want in their own virtual world.

  2. This is really interesting and funny because I cant believe this can be used to play online games!! Its crazy how much technology is improving and getting all 3D and such! I wish i could try using the VR system to play a type of game haha It seems it would be craazy

  3. I have heard of VR being used in gaming before such as the Oculus Rift but I did not expect it to have other uses besides gaming. It is important to know what type of technology we have at hand so that our future is as productive as it can be. I find it interesting that the technology we have been producing is incredible to the point that we do not have to be at certain places to do certain activities. I see this virtual reality technology destined to do great things.

  4. Oh yeah! I remember watching a behind-the-scenes special on the Avatar movie (the blue people one) and I believe that VR was used to create these virtual images. I also remember watching a movie where a video game is controlled entirely through VR and the player must perform physical acts to defeat the opponent (jump kicks, karate chops, Chuck Norris, etc etc). We have created and improved technology so much to a point that it's scary. I think that this is a really important topic and if it is researched and implemented further, maybe Avatar could become a reality.

  5. This is very interesting and I feel technology is really changing, I remember using the Oculus Rift at Barca Stadium to walk around the whole area and see an up and personal view on virtual reality. Other then video games its amazing what other purposes this could hold like hooking up a camera to a robot and using the oculus rift or VR system in order to get a first person view in places where we can not reach. I feel that it is amazing how a century ago the biggest technology was a landline and now we have got to the point where we are virtually creating reality

  6. It's interesting how much technology is evolving in such a short period of time, I cannot wait to see how many other ways this could be applied to the real world to help the world. For example, you could use it for new surgeons, and to train them to be ready for the whole world. This is just one example of how this could be applied, and I'm sure there are many other applications.

  7. This is a huge step in the gaming world as you mentioned. The virtual experience from third person would be something that hasn't been replicated in the past. I can see that it would get some getting used to it, as it would be difficult to try it for the first time. How much do these cost?

  8. The world as we know it is changing all around us, and things such as video games and taking tests.can change entirely because of great new technology like the VR. It is exciting to know that in the near future, you can step into a place designed by you, or travel across the globe, and play your favorite games in the shoes of the characters. Although this is a great idea, is the world really ready for this? Would it be too expensive for many people to use productively?

  9. This new technology, the VR, could really expand the gaming world and allow many people to have a lot more fun. Although it most likely will be used for gaming purposes, can it be used for like investigations, or like spying because people could really use this technology to make this a more safer world.
